How to Create a Familiar Spirit Step by Step | Magical Creature Making Process

Some time ago, I was commissioned to create a creature inspired by supernatural beings or monsters for a raffle at a live role-playing association. The participants were characterized as werewolves, gorgons, vampires… so the first thing that came to mind was a familiar spirit, a small creature that could accompany the winner on their adventures.

What is a familiar spirit?
A familiar spirit is a magical creature that establishes a special bond with a person, accompanying and protecting them in their daily life. Traditionally associated with witches, they act as a guide, messenger, or guardian, and often reflect a part of the soul or energy of the one who invokes them.

Creative Process

In the end, I decided to make a raven, as it reminded me a lot of Edgar Allan Poe's stories, and it seemed to fit the theme perfectly.

I don't usually sketch for the pieces I'm going to make; I like to let my mind improvise as I go. I usually use a real animal as a reference, but in this case, I decided it was best to start with a sketch of the creature.

I didn't put too much effort into the illustration, as it was just a quick base for the figure. Still, it turned out adorable, and perhaps I'll finish it at some point.

With the sketch in sight, I began to create the raven's structure with wire, primarily aiming for the legs to be more resistant and not break easily. I also managed to give them a bit of articulation.

Then I sculpted the legs and beak with white polymer clay. You can also do it directly with the final color (black in this case), but I feel more comfortable working with white clay and then painting with acrylics.

I usually glue the pieces with an adhesive that is not too aggressive and that works well with fabrics.

Then I continued adding wool until I felt I had enough space to place the eyes. In this case, I decided they should be shiny and change color with the light, as that would give the raven a more magical look.

As a tip, I would tell you to buy mineral beads or small pieces that fit your style, as they can provide that extra touch of magic to your creations.

Once everything was glued, I continued sculpting with wool. For the wings, I started with a base of white wool, which is much easier to work with due to its texture, and then covered it with the dark purple color I used for the raven's plumage.

In the image, you can see some extra clay pieces, of which I ultimately only used the largest one for a detail on the back that I will show you at the end of the blog.

here the raven begins to come to life, so I continued adding wool and small feathers made of wool.

When I was satisfied with the creature's shape, I added some shadows and small touches of color with acrylic paint. This can also be done with wool, but I like to use paint as part of my personal touch.

Additionally, I finished painting the back piece and added some more decorative details.

And this is the final result of this adorable familiar spirit, who loves to read and collect small shiny treasures to keep in its backpack.

I hope you enjoyed this magical creative process. If you decide to create your own, feel free to send me photos or share it in the comments.

You can also commission a personalized familiar spirit if you prefer, and I will personally bring it to life.

See you in the next adventure ✨🦊
